PRESS RELEASE :
THE YAWKEY BASEBALL LEAGUE IS PLEASED TO INTRODUCE THE MALDEN BULLDOGS
January 8, 2007 – The Yawkey Baseball League is pleased to announce the launch of the Malden Bulldogs, a new league franchise in the City of Malden.
The Yawkey Baseball League is the Boston area's premiere amateur baseball program. It is named in honor of Baseball Hall of Famer, and former Red Sox, Thomas Austin Yawkey. Beginning in the 1950’s, the YBL has become the largest area program for men, playing a 32-game schedule with wooden bats.
The Malden Bulldogs franchise, which will begin in the spring of 2007, is owned and operated by Dr. Kevin J. McGovern, PT, CSCS, president and founder of McGovern Physical Therapy Associates, and Mr. Patrick Spellman. Kevin is a doctor of physical therapy and a certified strength and conditioning coach with over 22 years of pitching experience, over 10 years with the Yawkey League. Kevin is also the head trainer and strength coach for the Nashua Pride professional baseball club. Pat has been a baseball coach for 10 years in various amateur and semi-professional leagues including the last 3 in the Yawkey League.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank David McKay, Yawkey League President, the Yawkey League Board of Directors, Harry Bovee, property manager for PL Management/Commerce Place, Councilor at Large Martin Gately, Malden Redevelopment Authority Executive Director, Stephen Wishoski, Youth and Recreation Permit Manager, Robert Rotundi and Kevin Larson, Malden community member, for their continuous support in helping Pat and I launch this new franchise team,” says Kevin McGovern. “The City of Malden has truly welcomed us with open arms.”
The Malden Bulldogs will play on two fields within the city. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8pm games will be held at Maplewood Park., which is located on the campus of Malden Catholic High School. Maplewood Park is currently being converted to FieldTurf, the same synthetic surface recently installed at Gillette Stadium. The home plate and pitching mound will be the only natural dirt on the field. When completed, this park will be one of the premier playing fields in Eastern Massachusetts. Sunday games, held at 1pm, will be held at Devir Park, located just off of the Fellsway. Also, the Malden Bulldogs will be hosting a pre-season tournament at Maplewood Park field. Please visit the Bulldog’s website for more information.
The Malden Bulldogs are currently sponsored by: McGovern Physical Therapy Associates, an outpatient physical therapy company located in Revere, Malden and Beverly, MA, Game 7 Baseball, a baseball instruction and player development company, and Yennaco Custom Gloves and Apparel of southern New Hampshire. Jay Yennaco will be supplying the Bulldogs with their equipment and apparel.
The Bulldogs roster will be anchored by Lenny Carter. Lenny was an All-American out-fielder for the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. He was also a left-handed starting and relieving pitcher and player for two seasons in the Can-Am Baseball League. The remainder of the roster currently consists of 11 players from various backgrounds. An open try-out will be held in January and April of 2007. The Bulldogs encourage prospective players to visit the Bulldog’s website for more information.

"I have to say that my experience at McGovern was great. Not only did the treatment that I received help me, but the attitudes and kindness of the staff made it easier for me to understand my pain and what is going on with my body. I want to thank everyone for their kindness. It was a wonderful experience and I feel good. I would definitely recommend McGovern to anyone."- Mary I., Revere, MA Read More
